The Tutukaka Heads Track came highly recommended, so on Good Friday after breakfast we ventured out to tackle the track.
The Tutukaka coast has been named by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and I can certainly attest to its beauty.
To start the walk you can park at Tutukaka Marina which is well worth a stroll around in its own right as it is very picturesque.
The marina is situated just off Matapouri Road around 400 metres from the Oceans Resort Hotel. There is a private access road marked ‘Private Road’ but the public do have right of passage.
Once you are at the top of the private access road turn right and walk along the road until you reach the start of the track.
The track leads to Tutukaka Lighthouse and is around 1 hour return. More if you stop and takes lots of photographs. The walk is relatively easy but is a bit steep and slippery in parts.
The views along the way really are stunning.
The track runs along the top of a headland passing pohutukawa trees with stairs leading down onto the rocks.
On the way to the stairs we came across the perfect place for a breather and to take in the view.
I think I could’ve stayed there for hours just taking it all in.
We descended down the steps and came across a beautiful beach where there were some guys kayaking and spear fishing.
The track leads along the beach and then leads upwards to the lighthouse. This was the steepest part of the hike.
I promise you that the views are well worth it. We were greeted by a stunning vista when we got to the top.
This was a beautiful hike and I would recommend it if you are visiting the Tutukaka Coast. After a hot hike we were grateful to jump into the sea at the nearby Sandy Bay beach.
What do you think?
Is this a hike you’d like to do?
