I’m a big lover of brunch and I love nothing better than trying a new brunch spot if I have a free weekend. I was a big fan of a cafe called Alleluya that used to occupy the spot where Bestie now sits. However Bestie is a fantastic replacement for my old favourite.
Situated inside St Kevin’s Arcade on Karangahape Road, there are impressive views of the Sky Tower from the large windows at the end of the arcade.
By night the seating area becomes home to Gemmayze Street – a Lebanese restaurant which I have reviewed here if you would like to have a read.
The menu is mouth watering and I was torn between a savoury dish and the amazing sounding peanut butter donuts with peanut pretzel crumb served with a strawberry jam dip.
My friend Jodie started with a flat white and I went for a home made lemonade.
Brownie points for using metal straws and reducing their plastic waste.
Soon, our feast arrived at the table. Obviously we had to get a side of the halloumi fries to share. I can never see halloumi fries on a menu and not order them.
Jodie went for the flatbread with spicy chorizo, labneh, chilli fried egg, home-made pickles and fresh herbs.
I had the Mexican beans with carrot and jalapeno puree, chilli fried egg , smoky salsa roja, yucatan pickled onion, labneh and sourdough. It could have been a bit hotter temperature wise but it was still delicious.
The halloumi fries were huge! Not that we were complaining. They came in a portion of five so we had two and a half each.
If you’re around the K Road area, I couldn’t recommend Bestie enough. It’s also pretty close to Moustache Cookie Bar so you could always pop there for dessert if the peanut butter donuts haven’t tempted you already.
You can find out more about Bestie here.
