Back for another year, the Night Noodle Markets returned to Auckland to the excitement of hungry Aucklander’s everywhere.
Victoria Park began filling up with vendors in white tents offering a variety of Asian dishes and the smells wafting our way as we entered meant we couldn’t wait to sample the dishes on offer.
The markets were so popular last year that this year they have extended their stay for ten whole days before moving on to Christchurch in February and Wellington in April.
We began our quest to sample as many dumplings, noodles and street food dishes as we could manage.
I couldn’t help but make a beeline for White & Wong’s – one of my favourite central city restaurants. They are offering hawker style rolls and I went for the Bang Bang Chicken option.
Paired with a Tiger Beer – what could be better?
Whenever the word ‘bao’ is on a menu, it’s futile to resist. The pulled pork steamed bun came gently spiced in a sweet chilli sauce with crunchy coleslaw.
This year the markets have introduced a cashless system which makes it much easier than trying frantically to find an ATM.
There are plenty of areas to sit and listen to the live entertainment and devour your array of goodies.
Also on offer are giant chicken and pork belly skewers and the spud stack – a whole potato deep fried in a spiral around a stick. Choose from chicken or garlic salt for flavouring.
One of the most popular dishes was the banana deep fried ice cream with coconut pudding – very calorific but worth every bite I promise.
The Night Noodle Markets will be at Victoria Park in Auckland until 10th December. An evening well spent.
